In short
How it works
- STAAR is the state test. Students take it in grades 3 to 8 and in some high school courses.1
- “Meets grade level” means the student is ready for the next grade. A lower level, “approaches,” means the student passed but may need help.1
- The rates count test results, not students. One student can take more than one test.1
What the numbers show
| All grades, all subjects (2025) | Approaches or above | Meets or above | Masters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leander ISD | 85% | 65% | 33% |
| Texas | 75% | 50% | 21% |

- Reading did better than math. 71 of every 100 reading results met grade level. In math it was 58.1
- Nearby districts vary. Round Rock ISD was also at 65. Hutto ISD was at 48. Georgetown ISD was at 46.2
| Group in Leander ISD (2025) | Meets or above |

| Students in special education | 30% |
| Students from low-income families | 39% |
| English learners | 50% |
| All students | 65% |
The other side
- Leander ISD has fewer students from low-income families than the state. In Leander ISD, those students met grade level at a lower rate. So part of the gap with the state may reflect who the students are. See who the students are.1
- A test score is one snapshot. It does not show art, sports, job skills or how students feel at school.
- Test changes can move scores. The state changed the tests in 2023. So older scores are not a fair match.1
Questions to ask
- Where does the district post state test results by school?
