In short

  • Leander collects nearly all of its property tax in the year it is billed. From 2021 to 2025, the share was 98.74% to 100%.1
  • The lowest year was 2024, at 98.74%. About $0.7 million of that year’s tax was not paid during the year (our math).2
  • In 2025, total collections were 104.05% of the year’s bill. The statement does not say why.1

Numbers marked “our math” are our estimates, not official figures. The notes show the inputs and the steps.

How it works

  • The city sets a tax rate, and the county tax offices send the bills. See cost of collecting property tax.
  • The city reports its collection rate when it borrows. Its bond statements include a table of tax rates, bills and collections.1
  • The table has two collection columns. “Current” is the share of that year’s bill paid during the year. “Total” is all collections as a share of that year’s bill.1
  • Years are the city’s budget years. Each ends Sept. 30.1

Source: the city’s April 2026 bond statement, Table 4.1

  • Unpaid tax in the lowest year was small next to the bill. In 2024, about 1.26% of the bill, or about $0.7 million, was not paid during the year (our math).2
  • The 2026 year is not in yet. The statement says collections were “in progress.”1

The other side

  • Unpaid this year does not mean lost. Taxes paid late can come in later years. The statement does not show how much of each year’s bill was paid in the end.1
  • The statement does not explain the 2021 and 2025 figures. In 2021, total collections were a bit below current collections. In 2025 they were above 100%. We do not know why.1
  • This is the city’s own report, in paperwork for investors. It is a preliminary statement and may change.1

Questions to ask

  • What made total collections higher than the year’s bill, by the city’s account?
  • How much past-due city tax is still owed?

What we still don’t know

  • How Leander’s collection rate compares with nearby cities.
  • How much of each year’s unpaid tax was paid later.
