In short

  • Private jobs in the county paid about $83,200 on average in 2024. The Texas average was about $76,700.1
  • Factory jobs paid the most, about $153,900. That is much more than the Texas factory average of about $94,400.1
  • Restaurant, hotel and fun jobs paid the least, about $28,300. This count does not say how many of those jobs are part time.1

How it works

  • This count comes from state job insurance records. Almost every employer must report its workers and pay.1
  • It counts jobs located in the county. A person who lives here but works in Austin is not counted here.1
  • “Average pay” is total pay divided by the average number of jobs. Part-time jobs count the same as full-time jobs.1

  • The federal count does not say why factory pay is high here. It does not name employers. See biggest employers for the largest ones.1
  • Banks, insurance and real estate paid less here than the state average. So did private health care and schools.1

The other side

  • An average can be pulled up by a few very high salaries. This count does not give the middle (median) pay.1
  • It leaves out most self-employed people.1
  • This page does not adjust for living costs. Pay that looks high may buy less in a costly area.
  • Government jobs are left out of the table. They are counted separately.1

Questions to ask

  • Does the county track how many jobs in each industry are part time?
  • Where does the county post wage data for its own reports?

Changes to this page

  • Nov. 2, 2026: Added questions to ask.
  • Nov. 2, 2026: We removed guesses the federal count does not support (why factory pay is high, part-time work, housing costs).
